Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS), one of Alberta’s largest school divisions, is looking for an Intermediate Accountant to join their Financial Services Department at Central Office in Sherwood Park. This permanent role focuses on capital asset accounting, financial operations, and banking, supporting the division’s commitment to providing students and staff with the tools they need to succeed. Key Responsibilities
Tangible Capital Asset Accounting

Manage authorization for expenditure forms and capital asset addition forms, assessing the impact of approvals on the division’s financial statements.

Record and track capital assets, including additions and disposals, and calculate amortization.

Coordinate annual verification of capital asset listings with schools and departments.

Process biannual accounting entries to close and capitalize work-in-progress accounts, updating reports as needed.

Prepare capital asset reporting, review and reconcile Statement of Final Costs, and support Infrastructure Maintenance and Renewal (IMR) funding Expenditure Plans.

Develop capital asset projections for budget planning.

Prepare agendas and supporting materials for Capital Committee meetings, attend meetings, and record minutes.

Ensure compliance with Alberta Education and Childcare School Capital Manual requirements for capital and non-capital expenditures.
Financial Operations and Banking

Review and approve journal entries, prepare ad-hoc and recurring complex journal entries, and conduct purchasing card audits.

Complete purchasing card transaction uploads and prepare quarterly GST self-assessments.

Assist with daily banking and cash flow projections, ensuring accurate monitoring of bank balances.

Review and approve monthly bank reconciliations.

Oversee daily banking operations, including transferring funds between accounts and processing investment transactions.

Communicate with financial institutions to resolve service issues and negotiate resolutions as needed.

Prepare, process, and approve various banking transactions, including electronic fund transfers (EFT), wire payments, tax and bill payments, stop payments, and direct debits.

Provide financial support and guidance to departments across the division.
Qualifications and Experience
We’re looking for an Intermediate Accountant who combines technical accounting skills with a collaborative, service-oriented approach.
Essential Requirements:

Strong accounting background with experience in capital asset accounting, financial operations, and banking.

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, with the ability to analyze data and prepare accurate financial reports.

Experience preparing journal entries, reconciliations, and financial projections.

Knowledge of accounting standards and compliance requirements, including those specific to public sector or educational settings.

A client-service mindset, with the ability to interpret and convey financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Experience with purchasing card audits and banking transactions is an asset.

Previous experience in a school division or public sector environment is helpful but not required.
