2. Filling: The pre-soaked rice is mixed with coconut milk, salt, and any other additions. This mixture is carefully spooned into the hollow bamboo tubes, typically filling them only two-thirds full to allow the rice to expand during cooking.

3. Sealing: The open end of the bamboo tube is sealed tightly, often with a plug made from the bamboo itself or with banana leaves. This crucial step traps the steam inside, allowing the rice to cook thoroughly and absorb the full aroma of the bamboo.

4. Roasting: The sealed bamboo tubes are placed directly over or next to hot coals of an open fire. They are roasted for 30 to 45 minutes, and are turned periodically to ensure even cooking and to prevent the bamboo from burning. The cooking is complete when the bamboo outer layer is charred and blackened.

5. Serving: Once cooked, the bamboo tube is split open lengthwise, often with a sharp tap from a machete. The fragrant, cylindrical log of rice is then served directly from the bamboo, which acts as a natural and aromatic bowl.
